How to Create a Custom Rug
1. Share Your Vision
Bring your ideas—sketches, inspiration photos, or room specs—to our rug ambassadors, whether at a Tufenkian showroom, through an authorized dealer, or online. We’ll explore materials, sizes, colours and design options with you.
2. Customize the Size or Shape
If you’ve found a design in our collection that you love, we can adjust it to fit your space. Many of our rugs can be resized or reshaped—whether you need a different dimension, a runner, or another format—while preserving the original design and craftsmanship.
3. Create and Sample Your Design
With a palette of more than 1,200 colors, the design possibilities are wide open. Once your design is finalized, we’ll produce a 1'×1' or 2'×2' strike-off sample so you can see and feel the rug before moving into full production.
4. Receive Your Handcrafted Custom Rug
Each rug is handmade by skilled artisans, which takes time and precision. A 9'×12' rug can require thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of knots to complete. Depending on the design, materials, and origin, production typically takes between 90 days and six months.

Yes. Tufenkian can accommodate almost any size or shape requests. This includes
rounds, runners, curves, irregular shapes, oversized pieces and stair runners. Feasibility and production details are provided once a custom request is received.
Tufenkian’s color library contains more than 1,200 colors. Our team will help develop a palette around your reference materials. Because screens, dye lots and handmade materials vary, final color decisions will be based on a physical strike-off rather than
a digital image.
Pricing depends on size, design complexity, materials, construction, sampling, freight and schedule. For many designs in the current Tufenkian line, custom pricing is comparable per square foot to the programmed equivalent. Every project is quoted individually, and value-engineering options are available when a target budget is part of the brief.
Strike-off samples generally take four to six weeks. Depending on the design, materials and origin, full production typically takes 90 days to six months. Design development, approvals and delivery time are additional. Your Tufenkian sales representative will confirm a project-specific schedule.
Once the design is finalized, Tufenkian will produce a 1′ × 1′ or 2′ × 2′ strike-off for your review so you can approve the colors, materials, texture, and construction before the full rug is made.
Simple resizing and recolor renderings are currently offered on a complimentary basis. Renderings for original designs, stair runners and work beyond a simple resize or recolor may carry a charge. Your rug expert will confirm any fee before proceeding.
Available materials vary by design and construction but include wool, silk, bamboo silk, linen, and other specialty fibers. Your rug expert will recommend options based on the desired appearance, hand, performance and budget.
A written purchase order and a 50% deposit are required to place a custom or special order. The remaining balance is due before delivery.
Because custom and special-order rugs are made to approved specifications, they cannot be cancelled or returned. Review all design details, dimensions, colors, materials and samples carefully before approval.
Subtle variation in color, texture and dimensions is part of the character of a handmade carpet. Tufenkian’s current standard allowable size variance is 2% in width and 4% in length.
Shipping and delivery requirements are confirmed for each project based on the rug’s size, weight, production origin and destination. Oversized or heavy rugs may require freight or specialized delivery. Your Tufenkian rug expert will provide the applicable details and cost, and can also provide details on our White Glove services.
